Here is a selection of tours and excursions visitors to Cabrera can enjoy during the course of their stay in the town. Some of these are available from within Cabrera but others will require traveling to the actual excursion location. However all are easily reachable and well worth the journey to get to them.
Jeep Safari
One very interesting means of seeing some of the countryside, attractions and culture around Cabrera and of the Dominican Republic in general is by taking a jeep safari. This excursion, which lasts a whole day, will take you to a variety of places of interest including Lake Du Du and the waterfall (Saltadero) in Cabrera as well as touring the countryside and visiting local beaches. An English speaking guide will be able to provide information on the cultural aspects of life in the Dominican Republic, describe the plantations you will see as you pass them by and how the various fruits and vegetables grown here are used in Dominican cooking. You also have the opportunity to visit a typical Dominican home to see how people normally live; which may well be an eye opener!
The jeep safari tour prices include all entry fees where appropriate as well as lunch and soft drinks. You will also have time to go for a swim and relax a little during the day. Don’t forget to take a towel and a camera with you so that you can capture the essence of the Dominican Republic to take back home and share with your family and friends.
Horse Riding
Horse riding tours are also an excellent way of getting close to the culture of the Dominican Republic and the variety of countryside and beaches in and around Cabrera. Whether you are an experienced rider or a novice there are horses to fit your needs and the tours can be tailored to your requirements. From two- hour rides to full day excursions, all of the tours feature breathtaking ocean and mountain views. There are daily morning and afternoon tours, beach rides, and tours that end with a bonfire under the stars. Even a romantic moonlight and sunset champagne tour!
Horse riding tours get you up close and personal with local residents, allowing you to appreciate what life is really like in the Dominican Republic. The guides will share their in-depth knowledge of the local culture, food, music, and everyday life.
If you have taken horse riding tours in other countries and been concerned at the conditions of the horses you will find a major difference here. Horses are still an important part of life in the Dominican Republic and are well cared for and in excellent condition.
Jungle Zip Lining
In case you don’t know a Zip Line consists of a pulley, suspended on a cable, mounted on an incline. It is designed to enable a user to be propelled by gravity from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable by holding on or by being attached to the freely moving pulley. When these are installed in a jungle environment, under and between a canopy of trees, the result is an exhilarating and exciting ride and makes watching Tarzan swinging through the trees seem almost tame by comparison.
Jungle zip lining has become a popular vacation activity in the Dominican Republic and is often combined with a nature reserve. Rated as a family friendly activity it is normally suitable for both adults and children over the age of eight, although in some facilities children aged four can zip with a guide.
One option for this activity, not too far from Cabrera, incorporates a large natural monkey habitat where non zipping group members can relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery and a refreshing drink in the restaurant and then interact with the monkeys in a non-impacting way.
White Water Rafting
To enjoy this exciting activity you will need to travel to the central region of the island up to the challenging Rio Yaque del Norte river near Jarabacoa. Slicing its way through the “Dominican Alps” you will experience class III to class IV rapids that will change your image of a Caribbean island forever.
Here is an opportunity to feel pure adrenaline while in the Dominican Republic! Experience the twist and turns of this river as well as the scenery and landscape. The Yaque del Norte River is the longest river in the Caribbean and here you can indulge your adventurous spirit. Descending the rapids and canyons of Yaque del Norte River is, to put it mildly, an exciting experience. Tackle the ‘Mike Tyson’ a 12-foot vertical drop and ‘The Cemetery’, a great stretch of rocks sticking up like tombstones. The river also offers winding curves of calmer water for easy drifting.
Trips are led by an experienced rafting guide and no previous rafting experience is needed although you need to be in good health and a strong swimmer.
Kayaking
A much more sedate way to enjoy some of the Dominican Republic’s waterways is a kayaking trip. Centered on the The Yasika River, which rises in the “Cordillera Septentrional” the northern mountain chain of the Dominican Republic, the river winds its way down to the Atlantic Ocean just east of Cabarete.
The section normally paddled is incredibly beautiful and although has some rapids this is a very easy trip, ideal for families and bird watchers. You begin your trip from a bridge and paddle downstream towards “Sabaneta de Yasika“.
Children from the age of 10 up can paddle their own kayaks and younger children can travel with adults.
Mountain Biking
For those who feel in need of some exercise instead of lazing around a pool or on a beach there are a variety of mountain biking excursions available either on their own or combined with another activity or excursion. Short rides of just 10 kilometers are one option extending to more arduous rides of 60 kilometers including uphill, downhill, off-road, and single track best undertaken only by advanced or expert riders who are fit. These excursions are available from several locations depending on the length of the ride and the degree of skill needed.
